The Alaska Job Market and Career Opportunities

Alaska employment fell slightly at the beginning of 2010, but showed positive traction over the remainder of 2010, which leads economic observers to predict that if the trend holds, "Alaska will have come through the national recession largely unscathed," according to the Alaska Department of Labor & Workforce Development.

Alaska Hot Careers and Job Projections

Alaska's employment hotspot is the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, in south central Alaska near Wasilla. Employment here has grown three times faster than the rest of the state in the past decade with a population increase of 42 percent since 2000. The borough has become an Anchorage bedroom community with 32 percent of the population commuting there. Mat-Su's economic strength is residents who spend their dollars there and not elsewhere.

Alaska's job loss during the recessions was relatively small compared to the rest of the country with the health care and state government sectors holding steady. Of Alaska's 20 fastest growing occupations, 17 are health care related. From the list of fastest growing occupations after health care, top categories include finance, computer-related, and engineering.

Alaska's Educational Opportunity

Twenty three of the occupations on the Alaska top jobs list require a bachelor's degree. With education as a priority, the Alaska Postsecondary Education Commission has set goals to increase public awareness of the value of postsecondary education and training, help residents to leverage training and education to achieve career growth, and target educational grant funding to Alaska's neediest students. No matter what your educational goals, think about attending Alaska schools online or on campus.
