Florida Careers in Biotech and Cleantech a Priority

During the recent recession, Florida has experienced a sluggish economy with unemployment higher than the national figure. Florida continues to encourage growth in top industry sectors such as tourism; information technology; defense; financial and professional services; and aviation and aerospace. The state is also actively seeking to build a market presence in emerging technologies such as materials science, nanotechnology, marine science, and cleantech (clean energy generation and green building technologies).

Florida Job Market and Career Outlook

The Central Florida Employment Council predicts that Florida industries with the best growth potential through 2016 are administrative and support services, social assistance services, and outpatient health care services. Private education and health services sectors added the most jobs in 2010 with leisure and hospitality following close behind, according to the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation. Florida economists recently predicted a gain of approximately a million new jobs over the next seven years as Florida's economy recovers.

Florida Schools Create Career Opportunities

The Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges reports that a $765 million increase in productivity of the Florida workforce is a result of improved education levels. To encourage economic growth, the Florida Task Force on the Study of Biotech Competitiveness has recommended that the state partner with Florida schools and institutes to help fund grant and scholarship programs to attract and retain faculty, staff, students, and top researchers to Florida schools. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Florida biochemists and biophysicists earned a mean annual wage of $76,120 in 2009. If you're interested in a career in emerging technologies, Florida schools may be the perfect place to get your degree with a little sunshine on the side.
