Illinois Careers - Education and the Economy
Illinois, like every state, has suffered from the economic recession of the past few years. On the bright side, certain sectors of the Illinois economy are experiencing modest to moderate growth. The mean annual income for Illinois residents as of May 2009 was $46,110, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The finance sector in Chicago has rebounded, and transportation and distribution is stable. Information technology is experiencing strong growth, and health care and human services demand is also growing.
Illinois Careers & Job Market Outlook
The highest Illinois jobs growth is expected in the computer and information technology segment, with the BLS anticipating strong demand for computer engineers and programmers. Mean annual incomes of over $90,000 for these jobs in Illinois were recorded in May 2009. The financial sector should only average growth, but financial analysts, financial examiners, and personal financial advisors will receive mean annual incomes of over $80,000. In healthcare, medical and health services management positions will grow faster than average, with mean annual compensation of over $95,000. Demand for registered nurses should grow much faster than average, and RNs can expect to earn a mean of over $65,000.
