In 2008 the average annual wage in Massachusetts was $56,759.
The five largest sectors of employment in Massachusetts, along with the estimated mean annual wage for workers in these sectors in May 2009, were:

- Manufacturing $36,250
- Professional, scientific, and technical services $75,910
- Food services and accommodation $25,110
As the five major employment sectors experienced a decrease in employees as late as 2009, a 3% growth rate was noted in local government and educational services.
An increase of 216,650 jobs is expected between the years 2006 and 2016, according to the EOLWD. The strongest growth will be in the professional, scientific, and technical services and health and educational services sectors.
