The unadjusted Massachusetts statewide employment numbers in October 2010 showed an increase of 21,500 jobs over the same month a year before, according to the Executive Office of Labor, and Workforce Development (EOLWD),. In October 2010, an estimated total of 3,221,600 people were employed in Massachusetts.

Good News for Massachusetts Jobs
Massachusetts has struggled with a shrinking local economy as the ravages of a recession gripped the nation. The number of MA jobs decreased by 6,044 between the third quarters of 2007 and 2008, the most recent data available. This was a 0.2% decrease in the job market. In 2008 the average annual wage in Massachusetts was $56,759.
The five largest sectors of employment in Massachusetts, along with the estimated mean annual wage for workers in these sectors in May 2009, were:
- Health care and social assistance $66,910
- Retail $25,430
- Manufacturing $36,250
- Professional, scientific, and technical services $75,910
- Food services and accommodation $25,110
As the five major employment sectors experienced a decrease in employees as late as 2009, a 3% growth rate was noted in local government and educational services.
An increase of 216,650 jobs is expected between the years 2006 and 2016, according to the EOLWD. The strongest growth will be in the professional, scientific, and technical services and health and educational services sectors.
