Even with the recent economic downturn, New York had an unemployment rate of 8.2 in August 2010, down from 8.6 in August 2009. According to a 2010 Kaufmann Foundation report, New Yorkers launched 40,000 small businesses per month between 2007-09. The Fiscal Policy Institute predicts that New York should see modest job growth through the second half of 2010 and into 2011. To foster recovery from the recession, New York plans to offer tax credits to companies in targeted industries--Internet publishing, scientific R&D, software development, and manufacturing--for investment, job creation and research and development.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that, in 2009, New York awarded the most master's degrees of any state (66,961) and is #2 for awarding bachelor's degrees (122,186).
