Utah Schools: Earn a Degree to Compete in the Expanding Job Market

Utah's diverse economy is poised to take advantage of the current national recovery and expansion. The state topped Forbes Magazine's annual list of best states for a business or career in 2010 and its current unemployment rate is well below the national average. Utah is projecting growth in most industries within the state and the Salt Lake City area should continue to expand and add to its stable job market.

Consider These Utah Careers for Professional Advancement

Even though the state should be a good location for many careers, there are some occupations expected to experience above average growth and qualified job applicants may find themselves in demand. A few of the Utah careers that should be considered for good employment opportunities are:

  • Registered nursing
  • Post secondary teaching
  • Computer software engineers-applications and system software
  • Secondary school teachers

Utah projects a very good job market for registered nurses with almost 7000 positions opening up by 2016 and the state's technology industries may add about 5,700 software engineers during the same period.

How Utah Schools can Assist Your Career

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that almost 29 percent of Utah's adult residents have a bachelor's degree and about 9 percent have an advanced degree. Continuing your education by earning a degree may allow you to compete for high paying job openings and could lead to more rapid career advancement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the mean annual salary in 2009 for a registered nurse in Utah was about $59,370 and software engineers earned about $83,350. If you don't have time to attend college classes, consider one of the online degree programs offered by many Utah schools.
