Every time McDonald's sells a Big Mac or Citibank opens an account in Barcelona, these American multinational corporations are engaging in international business. According to the Forbes magazine Global 2000 list of the biggest and most powerful listed companies in the world, in the past six years, combined total revenue for these firms jumped 55 percent to $30 trillion, while aggregate profits skyrocketed 85 percent.
During the same period, the number of workers employed by these firms increased more than 12 million, while the number of countries where these firms are based reached 62. Topping the Global 2000 this year is banking giant JPMorgan Chase, followed by industrial conglomerate General Electric, Bank of America, Exxon Mobil and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, known as ICBC.
