Conflict Resolution & Mediation

Specialists in conflict resolution and mediation can be found in a variety of settings. Some mediators work in the judicial system, helping parties settle disputes outside of court. Mediators within the judicial system try to help parties resolve conflicts without going before a judge. These professionals, sometimes called arbitrators or conciliators, can issue binding or non-binding decisions depending on the circumstances.

Conflict resolution experts can also be found in counseling settings or international organizations working to resolve disputes on the level of the family, community, or international region.

Education & Career Opportunities in Conflict Resolution & Mediation

Degrees in conflict resolution and mediation are most often graduate degrees. Master's degree programs in conflict resolution and mediation are growing as individuals and governments increasingly seek non-violent ways to settle disputes.

Bachelor's degrees in conflict resolution and mediation are more rare, but students studying sociology, social work, political science, or international relations may all be exposed to coursework in this field as they complete their degrees.

Conflict resolution and mediation jobs can be found in a variety of settings, but the most common is probably the judicial system. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that arbitrators should see faster than average career growth through 2018 due to a desire to resolve legal battles more quickly and cheaply.

According to the BLS, there were just over 8,000 individuals in this field in 2009. The median annual wage for arbitrators was $52,770 in 2009, but the top 10 percent of earners took home more than $109,950.
