People who work in security and loss prevention protect physical, financial, environmental, and human assets from loss and destruction, for the government, business and industry, and other entities. Security and loss prevention jobs range from bodyguard to risk operations analyst.
Today, leading security and loss prevention careers include health and safety engineer, occupational health and safety specialist, and loss prevention agent.
Health and safety engineers. Health and safety engineers, who earn a mean annual salary of $75,810 per year (mining safety engineers make $82,080), generally must have a bachelor's degree to launch their career. Many colleges offer two- and four-year degrees in engineering technology.
Occupational health and safety specialists. Occupational health and safety specialists, earn a mean annual salary of $64,200, need a bachelor's degree. Entry-level technician work, however, only takes an associate's degree or certificate but it may be waived for job candidates with great experience. Employment in this field is expected to grow rapidly between 2008 and 2018. Those familiar with more than one health and safety specialty should fare the best.
