They say money makes the world go around and accountants are the people who hold the keys to an organization's financial success. In addition to balancing the books, accountants perform auditing, tax and consulting for corporations, governments, nonprofit organizations and individuals.

Education and Career Opportunities in Accounting

The majority of accountants and auditors hold a bachelor's degree in accounting, and many also have earned a master's degree in accounting or MBA. Additionally, some universities and colleges are now offering accredited accounting degree programs--including online degrees in accounting--in specialties such as forensic accounting or internal auditing.

If you're an accountant working in a position where you are required to file a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission, you must take additional steps to earn your Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. Many professional accounting associations also provide opportunities for continuing professional education, as well as educational conferences and seminars.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment opportunities for accountants and auditors is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2008 and 2018.

It's a career that has tremendous financial earnings potential. The median wage for an accountant in 2009 was $60,340, with the lowest 10 percent earning $37,690 and the highest 90 percent earning $104,450.
