Online Certificate Programs in Radiologic Science

Radiologic science work is performed by radiologic technologists and technicians. Radiologic technologists and technicians use medical examining equipment pursuant to orders issued by physicians for diagnostic purposes. These medical professionals perform examinations using magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and mammography to facilitate diagnosing medical problems and detect disease.

Education & Career Opportunities in Radiologic Science

Most community colleges, and a number of universities, offer degree programs in radiologic science. Today, most states require that radiologic technologists and technicians be certified. Each state's health board is responsible for licensing radiologists. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists provides voluntary certification for technologists.

Employment prospects for students who have graduated from accredited degree programs in radiologic science are rising faster than the national average for all jobs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, radiologic technologists can expect a 17 percent increase in the number of available positions nationwide between 2008 and 2018. The best employment opportunities are for those who have training or experience in more than one diagnostic imaging procedure. Radiologic science jobs are found in diagnostic imaging centers, hospitals, and physicians' practices. The median annual wage (as of May 2009) for radiologic technologists was $53,240.
