Corrections
Corrections officers directly supervise inmates in correctional facilities and institutions. Officers are responsible for the daily control of inmate behavior, institutional safety and security, and implementing and enforcing facility rules and regulations. Correctional officers face numerous challenges in handling inmate populations and due to the number of those leaving the occupation the opportunities for career advancement are good.
Other corrections officer jobs include psychiatric hospitals, juvenile detention facilities, and privately owned and operated jails and prisons. Typically, most employers require a high school diploma, while other prefer candidates complete degrees in corrections or criminal justice. Federal corrections officers are required to possess a bachelor's degree.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, corrections jobs growth rate should reach 9 percent. The annual wage for correctional officers in May 2009 was $42,610. The Federal corrections system paid the highest annual wage of $52,310 in 2009.
