Online Coursework Programs in Pharmacy

The primary duty of a pharmacist is to distribute prescription drugs to individuals, but pharmacists also advise patients and physicians on dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications. Pharmacists may work in a retail drugstore or a hospital setting, and are responsible for paperwork such as insurance forms and confidential patient records. Some pharmacists specialize in disciplines such as oncology, geriatric or psychiatric pharmacy, or intravenous nutrition support.

Education and Career Opportunities in Pharmacy

Pharmacy degree programs lead to a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, which has replaced the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. PharmD degrees generally require four years for completion in addition to two to three years of prior professional study in mathematics and science subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics. The pharmacy degree programs also teach professional ethics, business management, and public health concepts. All fifty states, U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia require that pharmacists be licensed. This process requires successful completion of examinations administered by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP).

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment outlook in pharmacy is excellent. Pharmacy professionals are well-paid, with a median annual income of $106,630 as of May 2009. Pharmacy incomes range from $79,270 to $134,290.
