Geography
Geography jobs involve much more than just memorizing places. The men and women who work in geography are experts at understanding the relationships between people and places. Geographers who work as urban planners help decide the best placement for schools, shopping centers, and other public buildings, as well as the types of private construction centered around these dwellings. Geographers who work in forestry or conservation determine what types and how many trees can be cut for logging operations, or track animal populations or pollution levels.
Most geography jobs focus on public policy, such as urban planning. Other geographers work as transportation or environmental planners, and a select few work as mapmakers. Some work as foresters, climatologists, and conservation specialists.
Nearly every advanced job that includes geography requires a bachelor's degree or higher--and many require master's degrees in geography or similar field. Many schools offer geography degree programs, although earning geography degrees is not a widely chosen path amongst college students.
In 2009, conservation scientists earned median salaries of $60,000 annually, while urban and regional planners earned median annual salaries approaching $62,000. Environmental scientists and specialists earned median salaries of $61,000 in 2009.
