Event Planning
Event planners are the unseen organizers behind the smooth functioning of meetings, conventions, concerts, and a host of other types of gatherings of people that are brought together for a specific purpose. Event planning employees are highly prized by the businesses and government agencies that employ them and are paid accordingly.
Event planning jobs are found throughout the private and public sectors. Employers include business organizations, corporations, travel agencies, consultants, local government, colleges, and universities. Among the top-paying employers are pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturers, wired telecommunications carriers, and aerospace product and parts manufacturers. The average annual income in May 2009 was $48,060. The average event planner employed by the software publishing industry made $65,530. Employers often choose to hire applicants who have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in meeting management though most prefer to hire on the basis of prior experience in hotel and motel management, administration, and other relevant work. The Convention Industry Council offers a voluntary certification credential called the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP). This credential is valued by employers and assists in career advancement. Employment in the event planning field is expected to grow at a faster rate than other employment and increase by 16 percent from 2008-2018.
