Literacy & Reading
Teachers with literacy and reading degrees can be found at all levels of education. Some reading specialists work with elementary and secondary school children who may need extra help developing literacy skills. Others work with adults who are out of school, in remedial programs, or in post-secondary education programs to help them improve job opportunities. Still others focus on working with children and adults who speak English as a second language and may need additional help learning to read and write in English.
Literacy and reading jobs start with specialists who work on developing curricula or classroom materials to aid children and adults in the classroom. Teachers with literacy and reading degrees use these materials in the classroom to help students develop their reading and writing skills.
Some literacy and reading jobs are in the public school system. These positions typically require a bachelor's degree in literacy and reading as well as teaching certification. Literacy and reading degree programs at the master's level may provide more opportunities for advancement into fields like curricula development or administrative positions.
Literacy and reading teachers working with adult students had a median annual wage of $45,920 in 2009, according to data fro the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Adult literacy and reading jobs are expected to grow by 15 percent between 2008-2018.
