Computer software engineers design and develop the software that runs everyday applications from the top level of federal government down to the science fiction games played on Xbox. Computer and software engineering jobs evolve daily. As each technology evolves, computer and software engineering jobs change to match it. Computer and software engineering jobs can be broken into two categories: applications engineers and systems engineers. Application engineers work to understand the needs of the software user and then design the software needed. Systems engineers create computer systems within specific organizations.

Education & Career Opportunities in Computer & Software Engineering

A bachelor's from computer and software engineering degree programs is usually required to work in software engineering jobs. Most employers want real world experience, as well, and for some jobs certification in specific computer and software applications can offer job candidates a competitive advantage. For some computer and software engineering jobs, an associate's degree is sufficient. Computer and software engineering jobs are expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and those candidates holding a bachelor's from computer and software engineering degree programs should have the advantage. The mean annual wage for computer software engineers working in applications was $90,170 in 2009.
