The majority of accountants and auditors hold a bachelor's degree in accounting, and many also have earned a master's degree in accounting or MBA. If you're an accountant working in a position where you are required to file a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission, you must take additional steps to earn your Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment opportunities for accountants and auditors is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2008 and 2018.
It's a career that has tremendous financial earnings potential. The median wage for an accountant in 2009 was $60,340, with the lowest 10 percent earning $37,690 and the highest 90 percent earning $104,450.
