Online High School Degree Programs in Gerontology
As baby boomers age, there will be more opportunities in the field of gerontology -- care for the aging. Professionals who care for the elderly are often social workers who provide counseling to seniors and their families. Those who work in the health services gerontology field provide direct care-giving and medical attention to the elderly. Social service workers with a specialty in gerontology may run support groups for senior citizens and their families. They can also be involved in helping the aged with housing, transportation and long-term care.
There are several different avenues to pursue a gerontology degree. Today, more than 500 colleges and universities offer more than 1,000 gerontology degree programs. While you can get an associate's degree with a specialty in gerontology, most social service or health services careers require even entry-level employees to have at least a bachelor's degree in gerontology.
As the population of baby boomers age, employment opportunities for social workers--particularly those who specializing in caring for the aging population -- is expected to grow faster than the average (about 16 percent) over the upcoming decade according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Jobs prospects should be favorable, particularly in rural areas that need social workers. Wages for medical and public health social workers, in general, were $48,340 in 2009 according to BLS.
