Employers of travel agents are typically employment services, scheduled air transportation and airlines, insurance companies, travel services, and professional management companies. The highest paying employers of travel agents include the professional management companies, scientific research and development groups, and the sightseeing transportation industry.

In 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage in the travel and tourism industry was $30,790. The scientific research and development industry paid the highest mean wage that year at $45,570. Today, some vocational schools offer travel and tourism degree programs, and a number of colleges and universities offer degrees as well.
