Typically, most employers require a high school diploma, while other prefer candidates complete degrees in corrections or criminal justice. Federal corrections officers are required to possess a bachelor's degree.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, corrections jobs growth rate should reach 9 percent. The annual wage for correctional officers in May 2009 was $42,610. The Federal corrections system paid the highest annual wage of $52,310 in 2009.
