Education & Career Opportunities in Safety and Loss Prevention

Today, leading security and loss prevention careers include health and safety engineer, occupational health and safety specialist, and loss prevention agent.

Health and safety engineers. Health and safety engineers generally must have a bachelor's degree to launch their career. Many colleges offer two- and four-year degrees in engineering technology.

Occupational health and safety specialists. Occupational health and safety specialists need a bachelor's degree. Entry-level technician work, however, only takes an associate's degree or certificate but it may be waived for job candidates with great experience. Employment in this field is expected to grow rapidly between 2008 and 2018. Those familiar with more than one health and safety specialty should fare the best.

Loss prevention agents. Safety and loss prevention degrees typically are not required to enter this profession. This work, however, attracts a lot of people, so competition for jobs can be tough.
