Communications & media specialists, also known as public relations specialists, are the positive public faces for organizations. Employed by businesses, universities, hospitals, political organizations, and more, communications & media professionals help their employers maintain positive relationships with the public.

The roles of communications & media specialists are diverse. They handle the media, write and/or make public speeches, write press releases, and research attitudes and concerns of the community. They also might work with executives to develop company policies.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), communications & media jobs are expected to grow by 24 percent between 2008 and 2018, which would result in 66,200 new jobs. But the BLS notes that competition should be keen, and that earning college degrees in communications & media or related fields should help. Fulfilling work internships, as available through many communications & media degree programs, could also help. The profession's 2009 median wage was $51,960, according to figures from the BLS.
