Unlike career-oriented majors, in which the career path to follow is fairly well-defined, liberal arts majors help students design their own career paths. Liberal arts degree programs provide a general overview of the arts and sciences, with coursework ranging from anthropology to psychology, math, English, sociology, political science, history, and philosophy. The focus of liberal arts is on developing skills like communication, interpersonal skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and research -- skills that numerous surveys of employers and graduate school admissions officers (including law schools and medical schools) repeatedly show are most desired and preferred among candidates.

Education & Career Opportunities in Liberal Arts

Degrees in liberal arts can be earned at every level, from associate's to master's, bachelor's to PhDs. Although the majority of liberal arts degrees are earned in the social sciences, psychology and general studies remain popular programs of study as well. Degrees in liberal arts can lead to any number of careers, including teaching, social work, graphic design, and more. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social workers should see 16 job growth between 2008 and 2018, while teachers should see 13 percent job growth, and graphic designers should see 13 percent job growth.
