Online Writing Degrees and Careers

In the past, scribes with a "nose for news" entered the world of journalism through entry-level work at the copy desk of a daily paper. With today's sophisticated use of broadcast and print technology and software, and with demanding specializations in political, environmental, and education reporting, most people prepare for these careers in journalism schools and colleges.

Today, working journalists serve on newspapers and magazines, in television, radio, and documentary-film reporting, in public relations, and on the newest journalism frontier: Internet publishing.

Traditionally, the best preparation for journalism school began with undergraduate studies across the liberal arts spectrum, focusing on history, psychology, English rhetoric, and economics. With the advent of New Media, journalism colleges today emphasize training in software for print design, digital photo editing, and pagination, as well as on classes in traditional feature, news, and editorial writing. Journalism schools also offer graduate degrees in press marketing and media business management.
