As baby boomers age, there will be more opportunities in the field of gerontology -- care for the aging. Professionals who care for the elderly are often social workers who provide counseling to seniors and their families. Those who work in the health services gerontology field provide direct care-giving and medical attention to the elderly. Social service workers with a specialty in gerontology may run support groups for senior citizens and their families. They can also be involved in helping the aged with housing, transportation and long-term care.
