Online Master Degree Programs in Nutrition

Public awareness of the field of nutrition is increasing -- largely due to the epidemic of obesity and related health issues such as diabetes. Nutrition degree programs prepare student to prepare for their professions in hospitals, nursing care facilities, and offices of physicians and other health practitioners. Nutritionists and dietitians create food and nutrition programs and oversee meal preparation and serving. They can manage food service in hospitals and schools, or work in a clinical setting with individual patients.

Education and Career Opportunities in Nutrition

To work as a nutritionist or dietitian, you need a bachelor's degree. Nutrition degree programs include courses in foods, nutrition, chemistry, biology, physiology, institution management, and more. In addition, 46 of the 50 states require some sort of licensing, certification, or registration. A Registered Dietitian credential from the American Dietetic Association can enhance job prospects, and requires continuing education credit hours to remain current.

Growth in nutrition jobs is projected to grow by 9 percent between 2008 and 2018. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for nutritionists and dietitians was $52,150 as of May 2009. Median incomes ranged from $49,340 in special food services to $53,560 in outpatient care centers. The American Dietetic Association put the top annual median wage in 2007 at $66,061 for nutritionists working in education and research.
