Many people who earn history degrees work as teachers, but there are a multitude of jobs that you can obtain with a degree in history. In fact, very few history majors go on to work as historians.

Historians help us better understand people and societies, and they also help us understand change and the ways our world came to exist as we know it--historians say that the past causes the present and also dictates the future. People who study history learn to communicate effectively, critically analyze data, and complete research--job skills vital to many good-paying professions.

Education & Career Opportunities in History

Teaching may seem like a natural fit, but people who complete accredited degree programs in history work as museum curators, city tourism officials, and community development. History jobs also include working as a consultant to private firms and government agencies. Other historians work as researchers or advocates to a particular cause. In almost all cases, a bachelor's degree in history is the minimum education level required to advance to higher-paying positions, and the top jobs in the field require additional education, such as master's degrees in history or even PhDs.

Museum technicians and conservators earned median annual salaries of $37,120 in 2009, while museum curators brought home nearly $48,000. History professors earned more than $63,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, while the top educators in the field took in more than $110,000 per year.
