Most sociologists and political scientists hold advanced degrees from sociology degree programs. Those sociologists just starting out with bachelor's degrees from sociology degree programs can find sociology jobs as market or policy analysts, research assistants or writers. Those who graduate from sociology degree programs with advanced degrees have more opportunities. Graduates from sociology degree programs who hold a master's can often find sociology jobs in administrative and research positions. Graduates from sociology degree programs who hold a PhD are qualified to teach in post-secondary education.

Sociology jobs are expected to grow by 21 percent from 2008-2018, much faster than average position, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and competition for jobs for sociology educators in post-secondary education is expected to ease. Sociologists made a mean annual wage of $76,190 in 2009 and sociology teachers in post-secondary education made annual wages of $71,970 on average.
